Kota Tua Jakarta is surely famous for its historical streetscape and buildings. The oldest hanging bridge in Indonesia is located there, named Kota Intan Bridge. Commissioned by Dinas Kebudayaan Jakarta, Bagan, and PDA shall collaborate to propose a revitalization plan for the bridge and the urban spaces around it.
Design Approach
- To collaborate with PDA in studying the history and the bridge’s prominent design elements.
- To comprehend the importance of urban spaces development around the bridge, corresponding to its position as a part of the Kota Tua Jakarta development.
- To coordinate with Dinas Kebudayaan DKI Jakarta, PDA, and structure consultants in order to ensure this project runs well. Coordination is very important to decide which programs need to be applied on site, namely the toilet and the guardhouse.
Design Proceess
- Define the revitalization concept after understanding the cultural significance of the bridge. In this case, the proposal is to emphasize the bridge as part of the city element. As a team whose task to design the urban space area around the bridge, Bagan shall propose to emphasize the bridge by designing a hardscape pattern responding to the staircase’s shape.
- In response to the security issue, after coordinating with Dinas Kebudayaan, a fence shall be built around the bridge to prevent children from falling down. Bagan comes up with the idea to construct a fence as transparent as possible, while also setting low vegetation near the fence. The fence position shall also respond to the circulation of people in
- The guardhouse shall be as small as possible so it will not overpower the historical bridge. The geometry shall represent lightness. We propose that the materials of it shall be easy to destroy in the near future, since there is a possibility of future connection development between Kota Tua Jakarta and the Bahari Historical Museum.
