Being the prominent historical church in Jakarta, Dinas Kebudayaan DKI Jakarta intend to revitalize Immanuel Church to Immanuel Church to improve its quality as religious touism spot. Bagan was assigned to revitalize Immanuel Church, one of the oldest neo-classic buildings in Jakarta that was built in 1835. Collaborating with HAP and Netap Studio, Bagan and team attempted to bring back the original character of masterplan and landscape design based on research, while revitalizing church building to its prime condition.
Design Approach
Masterplan Design Approach:
- To study the original masterplanning around Immanuel Church from historical pictures and archives.
- To understand the historical and urban context of the church before the revitalization process begins.
Design Proceess
- Apply the original circular pattern referring to the historical archive. The pattern shall also respond to the position of Gambir station as its important urban context.
- Emphasize the church as the focal point by strengthening the axis. Axis is an essential element of neoclassical architecture.
- Develop a concept for pedestrian pedestrian-friendly masterplan. Transform the car-oriented design into a more pedestrian-friendly master plan. The concept shall be elaborated through circulation and public space development, as well as hardscape and landscape design within the church area.
