Tanah Abang Station is easily identified as one of the most crowded and busy train station in Jakarta. Connected with other transportation modes, namely bus, microtrans, bajaj, and even taxi online, the area around Tanah Abang Station indeed has potential to beintegrated with TOD concept. Collaborating with PSUD, NNP, Netap Studio, and PDW, our team participated in developing the architectural basic design study of Tanah Abang Mixed Use Building.
Design Approach
- To study the local context of Tanah Abang, especially about the circulation, pedestrian movement, existing buildings around it, etc.
- To research the theory and reference of TOD application in mixed-use around the train station
- To coordinate with the business and urban design consultant in the process
- To incorporate the client’s needs, TOD context, business plan, and urban design study into the design.
Design Proceess
- To apply the local context of Tanah Abang to the mixed-use architectural design. We proposed “De Nabang” as the tagline for the mixed-use based on the research of Tanah Abang’s history and local context. We inserted Tanah Abang’s local context as the place to sell textile products to the design, as represented by the facade elements.
- To support the TOD concept application, we collaborated with PSUD to design a building that shall optimize the transit space within the Tanah Abang area. In this case, we proposed to develop a permeable and accessible building following the flow of pedestrians.
- To ensure the business plan application by developing programs in the building that can amplify the economic activity in Tanah Abang, such as hotel budget and retail. Bagan, supporting the PDW team, shall propose the conceptual architectural design based on the programs mentioned above.
