Located near a prime Blok M area, Peruri complex is one of the oldest office building complexes in Jakarta. Within the area, there is a housing complex which includes to historical building categories. Referring to the old pictures, the housing complex has changed from its original state in 1956. In this project, Bagan was assigned to revitalize the building with an adaptive reuse concept application. This adaptive reuse project consists of redesigning the interior and exterior of the building.
Design Approach
- To study and research the cultural significance of the building, including the area around it. We need to indicate which part of the building is particularly significant historically, based on the research.
- To study the concept and references of adaptive reuse applications to historical buildings
- To apply the adaptive reuse concept when designing the interior and exterior parts of the building. Research-based design thinking is important in order to adapt the new function as an office and café successfully.
Design Proceess
- We conclude which is the insignificant part of the building, namely the additional massing that has not built originally. That part can be elaborated with modern elements as a design feature for the facade.
- Existing parts of the buildings that are identified as important shall be preserved and renovated. This is important part of the adaptive reuse application because the user or people who use this building in the future shall be able to recognize the original part of the building.
- The concept of interior design shall be concluded by client’s needs and future programs. In this case, the application of new interior materials shall not harm the original parts of the building.
